Turkmenistan Abolishes Internal Travel-Permit Regime

July 16, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimukhammedov has signed a decree abolishing internal travel permits for the country's citizens, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reported.


The presidential office said the decision was aimed at improving the welfare of the population and ensuring their free movement.


Turkmen citizens previously had to apply for special permission to travel within the country.


It's not yet clear when the move will come into effect.
