July 24, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Russian authorities said today that federal forces have ended an operation against militants in the Vedeno region, in southern Chechnya, RFE/RL's Russian Service reported.
However, an RFE/RL correspondent reports that fighting was still under way in the area earlier today.
Reports say that one Russian soldier died and three more were injured in the fighting. Six militants were reportedly killed.
Authorities say they were battling militants led by top Chechen insurgent commander Doku Umarov near the village of Tazen-Kale.
