U.S. Announces New Offensive Against Iraqi Extremists

August 13, 2007 -- The U.S. military announced today that it has launched a new offensive aimed at cracking down on extremists in Iraq.
In a statement, U.S. military officials said Operation Phantom Strike is focusing on Sunni insurgents linked to Al-Qaeda in Iraq and Shi'ite extremists allegedly backed by Iran.
The United States has accused Tehran of giving weapons and training to militias in order to attack U.S. forces.
Iran has denied the allegations.
