Gunmen In Ingushetia Kill Russian Soldier

(RFE/RL) September 9, 2007 -- Gunmen have attacked government troops in Russia's Ingushetia region.

Officials say one serviceman and two attackers were killed after a group of assailants opened fire on a base where Interior Ministry troops are stationed shortly before midnight.

The ministry say the fighting lasted about an hour, but Russian media report that it continued for about five hours.

Violence has increased in recent months in Ingushetia, a small, mostly Muslim republic that is part of Russia's North Caucasus.
