Lithuania: Probe Finds President Leaked Information

TEXT SIZE - +
Vilnius, 1 December 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A Lithuanian parliament investigation into possible links of President Rolandas Paksas's (pictured) office to organized crime concluded today he had personally leaked classified information. The report adopted by a committee is to be discussed tomorrow in the full parliament, which is expected to decide whether to start impeachment proceedings against Paksas.

The report said Paksas is "vulnerable" because of the links and "poses a threat to national security."

Lithuania's legislature formed a commission a month ago to look into information from the security service that the president's circle had had connections with alleged mafia members.

The head of the commission, Aloyzas Sakalas, said the president's office and Paksas himself were found to be responsible in several instances for sensitive information leaks.

Paksas denies any wrongdoing and refuses to quit despite weeks of protests. Thousands of demonstrators marched yesterday in Vilnius demanding Paksas's resignation.
