Reports from northeastern Afghanistan say at least 16 people were killed in an avalanche in the remote Wakhan Corridor that borders China.

Officials said another four people were missing and presumed dead after snow engulfed houses in Baroghil village on March 21.

The area is in the Pamir Mountains, 350 kilometers from the provincial capital Faizabad, and poor conditions meant access was only possible by air transport.

Afghanistan has experienced its harshest winter in some two decades, with more than 100 people killed in two previous avalanches this month.
