WATCH: Bombings Target Shi'ite Neighborhoods In Baghdad

A wave of attacks targeting Shi'ite areas in the Iraqi capital has killed at least 47 people and wounded more than 120 others.

The deadliest attack on October 16 took place when two parked car-bombs exploded simultaneously in a commercial area in Baghdad's northern district of al-Dawlai, killing at least 14 people and wounding more than 30 others.

The Islamic State (IS) extremist group, which has overrun vast areas in western and northern Iraq and neighboring Syria, claimed responsibility for that attack.

More than 160 people have been reported killed in attacks in Baghdad since October 12.

Also on October 16, U.S. military spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said that the capital is not “under imminent” danger from IS fighters despite concern over the Sunni group’s gains in the western province of Anbar.

Based on reporting by Reuters, AP, and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
