Azerbaijani President Sparks UN Protests

UNITED NATIONS -- Some 40 Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Turkish activists faced off outside UN headquarters in New York on May 4 ahead of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's appearance at the UN.

UN security guards said Azerbaijani and Turkish activists were forced to move because demonstrations were not permitted on the sidewalk directly in front of the building.

Organizer Nazareth Markarian said the Armenian protesters had gathered to protest Aliyev's "racist and aggressive" policies and rhetoric toward Armenia.

Markarian also said Aliyev was using Azerbaijan's position as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council to deny Armenians their rights.

Aliyev on May 4 presided over the council's debate on strengthening international cooperation on counterterrorism.

He called for a "comprehensive convention" on international terrorism. He said such an agreement could effectively prevent states from organizing, financing, and providing training for terrorist activities.

He also emphasized that the international community needed to prevent states from promoting terrorism, in addition to terrorist groups.

He also spoke at length about terrorist acts perpetrated by Armenia against Azerbaijan.

* CORRECTION: This article has been changed to correct the implication that Azerbaijani and Turkish demonstrators rallied to protest against President Aliyev's visit, rather than as a counterprotest to the Armenian demonstration.

Well, shame on you trying to lie the world. You and your 'azeris' invented belong to Siberia rather than armenians. Armenians can easily probe their existance in their lands since roman times. But your people can`t :P.

Turks and azeris Go Home! from whence you came!.

To my very big Regret, the article present Absolute Incorrect information!
There were 12 Armenians(no one Azeri) who expressed dissatisfaction of Azerbaijan's president visit to UN. Armenian protesters tried discredited president of Azerbaijan and Policy of Azerbaijan, but without results. Azerbaijanis and Turkish gathered 35 persons there, to demonstrate support of visit the president Ilham Aliev to UN and convict Armenian falsifications. New York's police or UN security guards didn't dispersed anyone! But for reduction of tension, the Azerbaijanis and Turks were moved farther from Armenians, and nothing more.

To the attention of RFE/RL editors,

The news piece published today by RFE/RL with a headline "Azerbaijani President Sparks UN Protests" (04.05.2012 18:55, <>), and signed only as "RFE/RL", is completely inaccurate and is indeed outrageous in its incorrect reporting.

The Azerbaijani and Turkish protesters did not gather "to protest Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's appearance at the UN" as RFE/RL falsely alleges. Instead, the Azerbaijani and Turkish participants have done a counter-protest against the Armenian lobby, as is obvious from all photos (a sample of which is attached), as well as to everyone who has been there, or known about the preparations of the counter-protest (it is customary for Azerbaijani and Turkish activists to stage counter-protests against Armenian propaganda).

The fact that RFE/RL correspondent was on site, referring to "UN security guards" and referring only to some "Armenian organizer Nazareth Markarian", shows malicious intent on behalf of that correspondent to supply an obviously false and untrue report for mass dissemination online through a reputable, taxpayer-funded RFE/RL.

Moreover, the fact that the correspondent interviewed and published only Mr. Markarian's outrageous allegations show the obvious nature of this hatchet job of reporting. If Azerbaijanis and Turks have supposedly joined the Armenian protesters, then why not interview at least one such Azerbaijani or Turk?

Likewise, the Azerbaijani and Turkish activists, who outnumbered the Armenian protesters, were not "forced to disperse" as is wrongly alleged in the report - as is clear from photos, they were protesting on the opposite side of the road, behind police metal fences, and without interference or objections from police.

To set the record straight, RFE/RL must retract this story and publish a correction on the same URL. Furthermore, RFE/RL should stop such anti-Azerbaijani and Armenophile reporting that now not only closes eyes or minimizes Armenian transgressions and violations, while at the same time treating Azerbaijan under a microscope, but even goes as far as falsify the record and inventing "news".

I am one of those Turkish and Azerbaijani activists who was there to support the president of Azerbaijan speech against armenian and all other kind of terrorism. For some reason RFERL claims that we were there "to protest against of Azerbaijans president appearance".

This is a lie. RFEFRL, I am expecting you to apologize.

This report is not accurate. How come Turkish and Azerbaijani people protested together with Armenians? As far as I know, there were Armenian people protesting Aliyev and Turkish and Azerbaijani people protesting Armenians for occupation of their land.

Yeah!? what you state is probably correct!

but imagine a day when people, be it Azeris, Turks, Armenians, and many others do not only defend their own tribe (for whatever reason without any criticism whatsoever, and turning a blind eye to the misery of people belonging to their tribe) but try to defend basic human rights, dignity, tolerance, peace, honesty and the well-being of other humans...

Sabina. Turks and Azerians protest with Armenians, because they have same roots. All of are "Rum dölü" (sons of Rome), Nor Turks nor Azeris look like real Asian Turkic people. They look like Armenians. Azeri - Armeni fight is a joke, tyrants need oppositions to stand alive their regimes. Poor and ignorant people believe there was a fight between Azero-Armenoids, Turko-Armenoids, Armeno-Phriygians...
