Azerbaijani Human Rights Defender Questioned, Offices Searched

By RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service
Azerbaijan's prominent human rights activist, Leyla Yunus, has been questioned by investigators and her Baku-based Peace and Democracy Institute offices are being searched.

RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports that Yunus, who was detained along with her husband on April 28, is currently in her organization’s headquarters, where police continue to search the offices. It is not clear if she has been released or charged with any offense.

Yunus told reporters in Baku after she was questioned earlier on April 29 that investigators asked her about her ties with journalist Rauf Mirkadirov.

Mirkadirov was extradited from Turkey and arrested upon his arrival in Baku on April 20 on charges of spying for Armenia.

Yunus was actively involved for many years in people-to-people diplomacy with Armenian human rights activists.
