Cambodian authorities have announced they will repatriate a convicted Russian pedophile.

The director of Cambodia's Interpol Bureau, Keo Vanthan, said on June 5 that authorities have declined to go through the legal process of extradition and will instead deport Aleksandr Trofimov to Russia.

Russian authorities have been requesting Trofimov's extradition since 2009.

Trofimov is wanted in connection with the alleged abuse of two minors in Russia.

Trofimov has already served half of an eight-year prison sentence in Cambodia on separate charges of abusing children in that country.

Before his October 2007 arrest, Trofimov headed a Russian investment project reportedly aimed at developing an island resort.

Based on reporting by AP and dpa

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
