The Daily Vertical is a video primer for Russia-watchers that appears Monday through Friday. Viewers can suggest topics via Twitter @PowerVertical or on the Power Vertical Facebook page.

A transcript of today's Daily Vertical can be found here.

Clarification: In a press conference on March 9, the head of the Russian Skating Union, Aleksei Krastev, said the banned drug meldonium had been planted on Russian skaters "by other athletes" not other teams as stated in the video. The transcript has been revised to reflect this.

When the Americans do not like any leader of any country - they just finance the riots and armed rebellion against the official government, and kill leaders and civilians of that country. The United States has established rules of the game: if you do not like somebody - kill them. The Chechens rather took an example from Americans: they didn't like the foreign journalists and activists, so they just beat them up. But the Chechens were more humane than the Americans - they didn't kill the foreigners. Hence, they are much more cultured and generous than Americans.

If the US has established the rules of the game then the Chechens are not playing by those rules (what else is new). Nowhere in the playbook does it mention doing harm to journalist or activist. Freedom of speech and the press are mandates that you obviously not able to comprehend.

Meran, you exaggerate the evils of the US, and read too much propaganda. Unless you of course you are a troll and chose to spread hate and lies. What foreign citizens and leaders have they killed? Where is your evidence, and do not say that it is a secret conspiracy that hides this awful (and non existing) truth. One thing that America does have to keep it's perpetrators in check is a free and open media like few in the world. Something you nor anyone else cannot say exists in the largely authoritarian and corrupt regimes you are writing about and probably working for. I hate bullies and liars no matter where they are from, whether from my country or any other. How can I respect, and believe a government that will say and do the anything just to get rich and stay in power? Even worse is the pressure and propaganda used against the citizens in order mask the deception and the lies.
Where are the real leaders of such a society? Honest men and women that only want the best for the people and the land... they are silenced, suppressed, beaten and murdered by who? Let me give you a hint, it is not the Americans. The pointing finger needs to be turned 180 degrees.

I have to side with you, partly. What do the western journalists do there? I do not think they care about human rights in Chechnya, that would be a real parody. It seems the West chose Chechnya as a ' tender spot ' in Russia. How else to explain the sudden interest in Chechnya and to Kadyrov?

Agree with your major point, but not sure about the title (The Masters Of Nothing). At last count, the Kremlin was still master of some 5,000 nuclear warheads. Such an arsenal provides a facade of respect to the most thuggish regime.

Seems as though Meran from the UK is as delusional as the Kremlin itself.I think it would be safe to say that he is being paid for his ridiculous comments. How is that $150 a month salary working out for you Meran?

Merans comments contradict the official Chechen view that the Journalists beat themselves up ( 'Humanely' ???, apparently).
