Washington D.C. Police Close 'Occupy' Camp Near White House

TEXT SIZE - +
Police have closed the last of the big Occupy Wall Street encampments in the United States, this one just a few blocks from the White House.

Some 50 police converged on McPherson Square to seize sleeping bags and tents protesters have used to remain in the square overnight.

Police say they are enforcing regulations that allow demonstrations at the site but prohibit camping.

The demonstrators say the police are effectively evicting them by forcing them to remove their bedding material.

Occupy D.C. has been the most visible of the few remaining camps that sprouted in U.S. cities in September and October in protest against economic inequality and big business's influence on politics.
