Dozens Killed In Attacks Across Iraq

TEXT SIZE - +
Bombings and attacks killed dozens of people across Iraq on December 16, the latest wave of attacks in a surge of violence this year.

The deadliest attack occurred just south of Baghdad, where two car bombs killed at least 23 Shi'ite pilgrims.

More than 50 were wounded in the blasts which went off as a group of Shi'ite pilgrims, who this week mark a religious festival, were walking to the holy Shi'ite city of Karbala.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Sunni militants  frequently target members of Iraq's Shi'ite minority, whom they consider to be apostates.

Earlier on December 16, a spate of bombings and attacks killed at least 47 people.

According to the United Nations, more than 8,000 people have been killed in Iraq in renewed sectarian violence this year.
