EU Reports On Bulgaria, Romania Raise Doubts

The European Union has criticized Romania and Bulgaria for failing to reform their courts, reduce corruption, and fight organized crime.

The Netherlands has responded to the new reports by saying it will continue to block the Bulgarian and Romanian bids to join the Schengen travel zone until at least June, when the European Commission is set to report further on the issue.

European Commission reports on February 8 said both countries have failed to meet reform expectations, five years after joining the EU.

In 2007, when Romania and Bulgaria became EU members, the Netherlands led opposition to either country joining the Schengen zone, arguing it would open the EU to more organized crime and corruption.

Residents of Schengen zone countries are not required to have a visa to enter another Schengen zone country.

Actually your last statement is incomplete. Schengen area countries do not have systematic border controls between them. Romanian and Bulgarian citizens, as all EU nationals, can already travel to a EU country without a visa and enter the Shengen Area by presenting only a valid romanian/ bulgarian ID card.

In other news from the EU: yesterday during the anti-EU and anti-IMF demonstrations in Athens, the Greek capital, German banners have been burned by Greek protesters. The further the EU "evolves" the more of a "community of values" where different nations care for each other and support each other it becomes :-)).

Actions of the European Communities reminded the formula-"shoot first and then think."
Romania and Bulgaria are two post-communist countries with the problems of dependency and crime.
Therefore, their acceptance into the EU is a hasty step of the Euro eggheads,If today they were candidates for EU membership it would be better for Europe..
It does not happen--we will accept them and things will get better.

The same story with the so-called - involvement without recognition, when a representative of the EU is going to Abkhaz racists and bandits who should be tried in military court in the Hague, and said:" let's be friends".
Certainly pragmatism which is inherent in the Anglo-Saxons is a good thing but what about the moral qualities and principles?
Who gave you the right to communicate with the racists and thugs?
It is clear that the unification of Europe slowed due to the inadequacy of some European entities.
Therefore, the EU decision should be based on common sense, not emotion..
