Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker says that the February 15 expected meeting of eurozone finance ministers to discuss a bailout for Greece will not take place because Athens has yet to meet the conditions.

Juncker, who heads the so-called Eurogroup panel, said in a statement released on February 14 that the group has not received "the required political assurances" from Greek leaders on the implementation of an austerity program announced in order for Greece to obtain a second, 130 billion euro ($172 billion) bailout.

Juncker said ministers would instead hold a conference call "to discuss the outstanding issues" and prepare their next regular meeting, scheduled for February 20.

In other news on the EU: after it was announced yesterday that Greece lost 7 per cent of its GDP in 2011, today one can read in the news that the German economy - the so-called "economic engine" of the continent - also entered into a recession in the fourth quarter of the year: the economic growth between October and December was minus 0,2 per cent. No wonder these guys are just so going out of their way focusing the public's attention on Syria - if not, they would have to explain to their electorates what they are planning to do about the economy.
