Gazprom Says Deal With China Close

Russian gas giant Gazprom has said it is close to reaching a deal to sell large volumes of natural gas to China and that a final agreement could be reached before the end of this year.

Gazprom chief Aleksei Miller met on April 9 in Beijing with the chairman the China National Petroleum Corp Zhou Jiping to discuss prices for Russian natural gas deliveries.

Miller said in a statement posted on the Gazprom website that "progress was made in negotiations on the price of gas."

Miller also said the "contract would enter into force before the end of 2014."

The next round of talks is scheduled for the end of April.

Gazprom has been negotiating to sell gas to China for some 10 years but China has continually insisted on a lower price than Gazprom is offering.
