Georgian Election Commission Gets New Chief

A former head of a Tbilisi-based election watchdog has become the new chairwoman of Georgia's Central Election Commission.

Tamar Zhvania was appointed for a five-year term on September 11 after her nomination, which was put forward by outgoing President Mikheil Saakashvili, won the backing of the commission's members.

Zhvania's predecessor, Zurab Kharatishvili, resigned last month and registered as a presidential candidate for the October 27 poll.

Politicians who have already registered their candidacy for the presidential election include former parliament speaker Davit Bakradze, who is a member of Saakashvili's United National Movement, and Giorgi Margvelashvili, the candidate of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili's Georgian Dream.

Saakashvili's party lost control of parliament to Ivanishvili's coalition after elections in October 2012.
