TBILISI -- A leader of a Georgian opposition party has been shot in an attack in the Georgian capital.

Aleksi Petriashvili was beaten and shot in both legs by an unspecified number of attackers while visiting a cemetery in Tbilisi on February 26.

Georgia's Interior Ministry said Petriashvili was now in hospital and described his condition as "stable and satisfactory."

Few other details of the attack were disclosed and little word on possible suspects.

The Interior Ministry said a probe into the attack had been launched.

Petriashvili, 45, served as minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration in 2012-14 as a member of the Free Democrats party.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
