Deputies From Oil-Rich Iranian Province Resign Over Proposed Cuts

TEXT SIZE - +
Iranian media say lawmakers from an oil-producing region have resigned in protest at proposed budgetary cuts.

Iran's semiofficial Mehr news agency reported December 10 that 18 lawmakers from the western province of Khuzestan tended their resignations over a draft budget proposal that would slash the province’s budget next year.

Mehr quoted one of the representatives, Abdullah Tamimi, as saying the government had systemically ignored the needs of the province.

He also accused the government of failing to suspend a controversial energy project in the province that sends water to neighboring provinces.

According to Mehr, the lawmakers' resignations have not been accepted and a meeting between the deputies and the vice president for planning has been scheduled to settle the dispute.
