Iraqi Electoral Commission Decides To Continue Work

Members of the Iraqi central election commission say they have rescinded their resignations, one month before parliamentary elections.

All members of the Independent High Electoral Commission had tendered their resignations on March 25, citing political and judicial interference in their work.

But chief commissioner Sirbest Mustafa said in Baghdad on March 30 that requests by "local and international institutions" had caused the members of the election commission to decide not to resign.

UN envoy to Iraq Nikolay Mladenov met with the election commission members shortly before they announced they will resume their work.

The elections are scheduled for April 30.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is seeking a third term, but his Shi'ite-led government faces strong opposition from Sunni-majority provinces.
