IRBIL, Iraq -- A student has reportedly shot and killed an American teacher at a private Christian school in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region.
Officials say that after killing teacher Jeremiah Small, the 18-year-old student, identified as Biyar Sarar, tried to commit suicide and was taken to a mental hospital.
Sulaymaniyah Province Governor Zan Mohammad Salih said there was an argument between the student and the teacher, and the student shot the teacher with a pistol and then shot himself.
Sarar was said to belong to the Talabani tribe, regarded as powerful in the region.
The Medes School, where the violence occurred, describes itself on its website as part of a private Christian network of schools in Iraq's Kurdish region that teaches in English.
