ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Kazakhstan's leading media rights group, Adil Soz (A Just Word), has announced its decision to stop monitoring free speech issues in the country.
The organization's chairwoman, Tamara Kaleeva, told journalists in Almaty on January 9 that the decision was prompted by financial problems.
She said Adil Soz could no longer afford its monthly expenses of up to $10,000 for media monitoring and the distribution of its findings.
Kaleeva said her organization must also stop distributing its "Hotline News" on the abuse of journalists' rights and violations of the principles of freedom of expression.
The nongovernmental organization has been working in Kazakhstan since 1999.
Kaleeva expressed the hope that her group's work could be resumed soon.
George Soros's Open Society Institute had financed the organization's activities in the past.
