PRISTINA -- Tensions were high in Kosovo's capital Pristina early on February 8, a day after police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse students demanding the resignation of a university dean.
Clashes broke out on February 7 when protesters attempted to enter the dean's office at Pristina University.
At least five police reportedly were injured by protesters who threw stones and red paint.
Some police were reported to have suffered broken legs or arms. More than a dozen protesters were also injured.
More than 30 students were arrested.
The students have been demonstrating for two weeks to demand the resignations of the university dean, Ibrahim Gashi, and several professors after local media accused some academics of publishing "forged academic works" in fake online journals.
The economic backdrop to the protests is widespread unemployment in Kosovo – estimated to be between 35 and 45 percent.
