Malaysia Deports Saudi Blogger Wanted For Prophet Mohammad Tweets

TEXT SIZE - +
Malaysia has deported a Saudi Arabian blogger, police said, despite fears voiced by human rights groups that he could face execution in his home country over Twitter comments he made that were deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammad.

Hamza Kashgari, a 23-year-old columnist, sparked outrage in the oil-rich kingdom with comments posted on the Prophet's birthday a week ago that led some Islamic clerics to call for him to face the death penalty.

Kashgari fled the country, but was arrested by police in majority-Muslim Malaysia on February 9 as he transited through Kuala Lumpur international airport.

"The Saudi writer was repatriated to his home country this Sunday morning," a police spokesman told Reuters. "This is an internal Saudi matter that we cannot comment on."

Malaysia has a close affinity with many Middle Eastern nations through their shared religion. The Southeast Asian nation is also a U.S. ally and a leading global voice for moderate Islam, meaning that the decision to extradite Kashgari is certain to be controversial.

This is an outrageous violation of #humanrights and evidence of my sustained concern regarding #Malaysia's appalling record of #humanrights and adherence to the fundamental principles of protection of undocumented persons, be they #migrantworkers #asylees of documented #refugees.

If #Malaysia was unwilling to provide protection to this man, they could have made arrangements to liaise with the #UNHCR who would have sought alternatives.

For #Malaysia to send #Hamzakashgari back to certain torture and death is to flaunt its disdain for #humanrights and for international disapproval.

This is exactly why I have raised serious objections to the #Malaysian #swapdeal based on flimsy #unconscionable #unenforceable #political #sidedeals with between #Malaysian authorities and the Australian Government through Immigration Minister Chris #Bowen http://bit.ly/nPTbzR, which allows for forcible return to #Malaysia of unassessed #undocumented #asylees arriving by boat.

The #UNHCR had tacitly sanctioned the deal though stopping short of signing the #politicaldeal.

The same reservations apply to the #Afghan #MOU.

I will return to further comment.
