Montenegro Opposition Deputies Interrupt PM's Speech, Shout Insults

Opposition lawmakers in the Montenegrin parliament shouted insults at Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic as he was to address parliament on May 13.

As Djukanovic -- whom the opposition accuses of corruption -- began his speech, deputies from the Democratic Front party stood up from their seats and started shouting, "Milo, thief!"

Djukanovic said in response, "Bravo, you idiots!"

The parliament session had been focused on how to overhaul the government to bring opposition representatives into some ministries.

Djukanovic survived a confidence vote in parliament in January after he managed to get support from the opposition Positive Montenegro party.

The party said at the time that it won concessions from the prime minister to include opposition representatives into the government in order to create conditions for free and fair parliamentary elections later in 2016.

Djukanovic had to rely on the opposition party's vote after his own partner in the governing coalition abandoned him.

Djukanovic has led the tiny Balkan nation of 650,000 as president or prime minister since 1991.

Montenegro is expected to join NATO later this year or in 2017.
