Muslim Inmates In Kabardino-Balkaria Start Hunger Strike

Some 50 Muslims in a detention center in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria have reportedly started a hunger strike to protest conditions.

The inmates in Detention Center No.1 in Kabardino-Balkaria's capital, Nalchik, managed to announce their protest in a text message sent to several local media outlets on June 12.

They say the hunger strike was launched to protest impediments to carrying out Islamic rituals, nighttime electricity outages, and preventing inmates from receiving family parcels.

The strikers say conditions have been deteriorating further with the approach of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which starts on June 28.

There has been no official confirmation about the hunger strike from detention center officials.
