Deals worth 3 billion euros ($4 billion) have been signed during a two-day visit to Germany by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev.

Germany's Economy and Technology Ministry reported that some 50 deals were signed but declined to give details.

Nazarbaev described the deals as a "breakthrough."

"There hasn't been anything like that between our two countries before," he said.

"We are giving [Germany] the opportunity to work with our resources -- rare metals, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, oil, gas -- and we are asking Germany to bring its technology and machinery to Kazakhstan."

Nazarbaev's trip is his first visit to a Western country since clashes in December between security forces and oil workers in the western city of Zhanaozen left at least 16 people dead.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, after talks with Nazarbaev, said she “energetically supported the president appointing a committee of inquiry to bring to light what happened."

Nazarbaev defended the police crackdown, while conceding that the deaths were "regrettable."
