Gunmen Kill Pakistani Sunni Leader

Gunmen have killed a provincial leader of a Pakistani Sunni Muslim sectarian group in the eastern city of Lahore.

Police said the drive-by shooting took place on December 6.

Shamsur Rehman was the head of the of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat group in Punjab Province.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police were deployed after the slaying to prevent more violence after an anti-Shi'ite faction called for protests because of Rehman's killing.

Pakistan has suffered frequent sectarian violence between majority Sunni Muslim and Shi'ite groups.

Shi'ite Muslims make up about 20 percent of Pakistan's population.

On December 3, gunmen shot dead a senior Shi'ite Muslim leader in the port city of Karachi.
