U.S. Drone Strike Kills 11 In Northwest Pakistan

Authorities say a U.S. drone strike targeted a Pakistani Taliban compound on July 19, killing 11 militants in a restive northwestern tribal region near the border with Afghanistan.

The attack came in North Waziristan, where for the past month the Pakistani military has been conducting an operation against the Taliban and other militant groups.

The officials said the dead included two "important" commanders of the Pakistani Taliban, but refused to reveal their identities.

The attack occurred in Data Khel, some 35 kilometers west of North Waziristan's capital Miranshah.

Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal areas on the Afghan border have for years been a hideout for Islamist militants -- including Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uyghurs.
