WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta says Iran is working to form a pro-regime militia inside Syria, warning that Tehran's growing presence could only aggravate the situation on the ground.

"There's now an indication that they're trying to develop, trying to train a militia within Syria to be able to fight on behalf of the regime," Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon.

"The Syrian people ought to determine their future, not Iran," he added.

The United States, Western allies, and the Syrian rebels accuse Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hizballah, of providing military assistance to the embattled government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Tehran, which is Damascus's last remaining regional ally, has denied this.

"There's now an indication...". Have you got any credible evidence, Leon, or just more political rhetoric? We have not forgotten Iraq's alledged weapons of mass destruction.

"Hello pot, you are looking rather black today!!"...Ironic how the people funding and arming sunni militants to overthrow the ally of the supposed current threat (read Iran) to the free world (read Israel) are proclaiming to the world how we should allow the Syrian people to determine their own fate...You think that by funding these unyielding, uncompromising, puritanical sunnis to contain Iran you are somehow winning....It be a hugely satisfying moment the day these same monsters you are covertly propping up turn their mayhem and destruction on you.
