Since the death of Leonid Brezhnev, three decades ago this weekend, a series of Soviet and Russian leaders have struggled with the same riddle: How do you modernize without jeopardizing your grip on power?

In the latest edition of the Power Vertical podcast, I discussed this issue with my regular co-host, Kirill Kobrin of RFE/RL's Russian Service.

Two very nice pictures attached to this article - finally this section of the web-site offers something interesting!!! Is it possible to order to the picture of Brezhnev in a nice frame, 45x45 format? If yes, please let me know where this product can be ordered and how much you charge for it.
BY THE WAY and talking about Russia: earlier today the RFE/RL informed us that the US $ 4,2 arms deal between Iraq and the Russian Federation has been cancelled. And right now (Sat., 21:30 CET) the Al Jazeera web-site is saying that the contract has NOT been cancelled, citing the Iraqui defense minister Saadun al-Dulaimi.
And if this latest news is confirmed, "Russia will become Iraq's second-biggest arms supplier", just as the BBC was informing us about a month ago.

By the way - talking about the Brezhnev-Putin continuity - this week the former double Soviet-British agent George Blake (who has been living in Moscow since the 1960s), who among other things made it known to the Soviet intelligence service back in the 1950s the existence of a tunnel that the British and US used to use in their espionnage activities in East Berlin, has successfully reached the age of 90 years and was congratulated on this occasion by President Putin who said that Blake "belonged to a brilliant group of stong and courageous men" "who contrinuted to the creation of a global strategic balance and therewith contributed to preserving peace" during the Cold War.
Congratulations, Camarada Blake - you did a good job undermining destructive activities of the British and the Beavuses!
