The Russian newspaper "Vedomosti" reports that, time permitting, Russian President Vladimir Putin will help cranes fly south for the winter.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin planned to put on a fake beak and fly a motorized hang glider to show cranes raised in captivity the way south for the winter.

Peskov said the plan was not certain but the Russian president intends to stop in Yamal for the "flight of hope" on his way to the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation organization conference in Vladivostok.

"Vedomosti" quoted scientist Yury Markin as saying: "The role of the pilot is the leader of the flock. He shows the route of the flight."

Putin would have to wear a white costume complete with beak to lead the birds in the right direction.

Based on reporting by "Vedomosti" and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
