Russian Athletes Banned For Doping

Russian Olympic champion Yulia Zaripova and 2011 heptathalon world champion Tatyana Chernova have been banned for doping.

Russia's antidoping agency RUSADA said on January 30 that Zaripova has been banned for two years and six months and faces losing her 2012 London Olympic gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase run.

Chernova, a double Olympic bronze medallist, has been banned two years.

RUSADA said Zaripova's ban has been backdated to July 2013, making her eligible to compete in next year's Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Zaripova's results from June 20 to August 20, 2011 and July 3 to September 3, 2012 have been annulled, covering the London Olympics but not the 2011 World Athletics Championships in South Korea when she also won gold medals.

The bans come 10 days after RUSADA announced bans for five Russian race walkers, including three Olympic gold medallists, for doping.

Based on reporting by dpa and Reuters

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
