Russian Cargo Ship Missing In Stormy Seas

Updated

A Russian cargo ship with a crew of 11 is missing in rough waters in the Sea of Okhotsk on Russia's Pacific coast.

Russian authorities suspended the search as darkness fell, ordering a Be-200 amphibious airplane back to its base in Khabarovsk.

A tanker was to remain in the region through the night.

The "Amurskoye" was reportedly carrying ore from a mine in Okhotsk when it transmitted a distress beacon at about 0415 GMT.

A Russian Emergency Situations Ministry official said that bad weather, including snow and rain, had been hampering rescue efforts from the start.

Small boats were not able to participate in the search and low clouds had grounded helicopters.

Based on reporting by Reuters, Interfax, and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
