Russian Owner Vows To Rebuild French Chateau Destroyed 'By Mistake'

An 18th-century castle in southwest France has been bulldozed "by mistake," but its Russian owner says he will build an exact replica on the site.

The mayor's office in the village of Yvrac, in the Bordeaux region, says workers who were hired to renovate the 13,000-square-meter manor and raze a small building on the same estate mixed them up.

Local media said the mix-up occurred after the construction company misunderstood the renovation plans of the owner, Russian businessman Dmitry Stroskin.

The chateau was a local landmark and reportedly had a grand hall that could host some 200 people.

Stroskin was away when the manor was razed to the ground.
