Russian Police Raid 'Bomb Lab' In North Caucasus

Officials say police have carried out a raid on what's described as a clandestine laboratory involved in the production of explosive devices in Russia's North Caucasus region.

Police said on March 14 that the laboratory was discovered in the city of Nalchik, capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic, by Federal Security Service (FSB) officers.

According to the FSB, nine ready-to-use explosive devices, components to make bombs, and explosive mixtures were found in the lab.

The raid was carried out days after officials said five suspected Islamist militants and their female accessory were killed on March 12 in a security operation in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Shootouts and bombings involving suspected Islamic militants and security forces in the Russian North Caucasus regions of Chechnya, Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria cause scores of casualties each year.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
