WASHINGTON -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili says he regrets having "compromised" on certain reforms during his tenure as head of state.

He made the comment at Washington's Georgetown University after meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and World Bank officials earlier this week.

"Every time I made [a] compromise on reforms I regretted it later," Saakashvili said.

"We enacted last year a law on protection for religious minorities. [There was a] huge backlash against it. But every year we tried to adopt it we said, 'Yeah, maybe not this year [but] next year. Don't need trouble now, right?' I regret I didn't do it the first year of my presidency."

The amendment to Georgia's civil code, which went into force in July 2011, grants the status of "legal entities of public law" to minority religious groups, including the local Armenian Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Evangelical Baptist Church, and the country's Muslim and Jewish communities.

Thousands had taken to the streets to protest the legislation, including the leaders of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Saakashvili was first elected in 2004 and his current term ends in 2013.

True, the religious recognition law should have been done sooner. Tbilisi was long a multicultural capital. Unfortunately, Obama is supposed to meet with the nationalist leader, Giorgi Targamadze, who strongly opposed that law, wanting Judaism to remain registered as an NGO, and not recognized as a religion. Hopefully American political leaders will do some research before they meet with post-Soviet politicians, especially in an election year.

Obama certainly does not have a happy face talking to a fascist scum Saakashvili - look at Obama's expression - he seems like swallowed a tape worm. US government officials perfectly know that "republic of Georgia" is backward fascist dictatorship. However US government is driven mostly by anti-Christian agenda. Which is why US government allies itself with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kosovo, and of course, rump "republic of Georgia"

Jack, we certainly don't need more aggression from Christian fundamentalists. We already have that with the Christian Democrats here. I'm not sure why allying with Georgia, in your opinion, would follow an anti-Christian agenda. Georgia was one of the first Christian nations and was Christian long before the rest of Europe.

you do not know your own history, both ancient and modern. In 14th century "republic of Georgian" king Bograd converted to Islam. Currently republic of Georgia is persecuting and ethnically cleansing Christian Armenians and others which have a misfortune to still live under Tbilisi control. "Republic of Georgians" confiscated ancient Christian Armenian churches and turned them into warehouses. Republic of Georgia is harboring Muslim terrorists, with approval of US government which bankrolls republic of Georgian regime. This all falls in line with anti-Christian agenda of US government

Jack, you Armenian idiot, does that mean Armenia was a recent convert to Christianity too?

Georgia does not "ethnicly cleanse" Armenians, however Armenia does ethnicly cleanse non Armenians from its territory.

BTW, technically the Armenians are not Christian, they are Gregorian, denying the dual nature of Jesus, which is a heresey to all other Christians Churches.....

Better to look at this for a history of Christian Georgia

@Alex, the Georgians were members of the original Church, being preached to by St.Andrew & St.Simon, Christianity became the state religion by 319AD.

Mr. Jack!.. is enough to write nonsense..
Currently, in the Caucasus there is only one illegal entity fascists and racists, it's Abkhazia where the murderer of innocent women and children live in other people's homes and apartments..

Who supports fascism, racism, apartheid and banditry in the occupied territories of Georgia??

Going to move "the straw in your pot", Mr.Jack...or help you?
Of course it is he .. our fearless knight defender of Nazis and racists Abkhazians--Mr Putin...
Better to let the bandits live in Abkhazia, looters and the Nazis, but not Georgian...What a "humane man", this guy..
I hope that eventually "the straw in your pot "will begin to move and you finally realize who is a fascist...

Although judging by your comments, you are a hopeless case..
