Sports Court Postpones Ruling On Sharapova Doping Appeal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that a decision on Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova's appeal against her doping ban has been postponed to September, ruling her definitively out of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The CAS said in a statement on July 11 that Sharapova and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) agreed to defer the decision, which had been due to be issued by July 18.

The statement said both parties wanted more time to prepare their case and also cited "scheduling conflicts."

The verdict is expected by September 19, it added.

Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, has been suspended from the sport for two years by the ITF after she tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January.

Sharapova filed an appeal on June 14, seeking to overturn or reduce the ban, calling it "unfairly harsh."

Based on reporting by AP and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
