One of the most popular Soviet and Russian film directors, Eldar Ryazanov, has died at the age of 88 from heart and lung failure.
TASS quotes relatives of Ryazanov as saying that he died in the early morning hours of November 30.
Ryazanov’s comedies satirized daily life in the Soviet Union.
His films ridiculed Soviet bureaucracy and lifestyle, but the lightness of his satires helped him dodge Communist censorship.
He continued to make films in Russia until 2006.
Some of his most famous films were Carnival Night, Hussar Ballad, Beware Of The Car, The Irony Of Fate, Office Romance, The Garage, and A Cruel Romance.
Ryazanov had been admitted to a Moscow hospital on November 21 due to shortness of breath.
He had spent several months in hospitals since suffering a stroke in November 2014.
