Spain says one of its soldiers has died in an explosion in northwestern Afghanistan.
Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said Sergeant David Fernandez died on January 11 while defusing an improvised explosive device.
The bomb was located on a road between the towns of Qala-i-Naw and Darra-i-Bun.
Spain has some 1,400 troops in the northwestern province of Badghis as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
About 100 of its soldiers have died during the mission.
Sixty-two of them died in a 2003 air crash in Turkey when returning home.
