Survivor Of Kazakh Special Operation Goes On Trial

AQTOBE, Kazakhstan -- The sole survivor targeted by a special operation in Kazakhstan’s northwestern city of Aqtobe in June has gone on trial in connection with a police slaying.

Ghabit Qurmanqul, 18, was wounded by security forces in Aqtobe in June, and his two associates were killed in the operation.

Qurmanqul was charged with terrorism and murder.

According to police, the trio was wanted in connection with the murder of a police officer in the region.

The Aqtobe regional court's spokeswoman told RFE/RL that the trial is being held behind closed doors.

Aqtobe and other cities and towns in western Kazakhstan made headlines in the past months after security forces killed several alleged Islamic extremists and terrorists in the region.
