One Suspected Militant Killed, Police Officer Wounded In Daghestan

One suspected militant was killed and a police officer was wounded in a counterterrorist operation in Russia's volatile North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan.

Daghestan's Interior Ministry said that a special security operation had been launched in an area around the villages of Pervokizlyarskoye, Kosyakino, and Kuznetsovka in Daghestan's Kizlyar district on June 4.

The operation is still under way as security forces and police search a nearby forest.

Daghestan and some other republics in Russia's restive North Caucasus region have been plagued by violence linked to Islamic extremism and organized crime for years, with scores of people being killed and injured.

Based on reporting by Interfax, RIA Novosti, and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
