Intense Fighting Reported In North Syria, Around Damascus
WATCH: An amateur video posted online apparently shows scenes of destruction near Damascus following a government air strike.
Syrian activists are reporting intense fighting in the north of the country and around the capital, Damascus.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, citing activists on the ground, says government troops and rebels were again fighting for control of the Taftanaz military air base in northwestern Idlib Province on January 3.
Rebels have failed several times to seize the facility in recent months.
Activists also reported air strikes, shelling, and clashes in several suburbs of Damascus as government troops seek to regain control of the areas from the rebels.
The United Nations on January 2 said the 21-month-old conflict in Syria had claimed an estimated 60,000 lives.
The UN-estimated death toll is nearly one-third higher than an earlier tally compiled by Syrian activists.
