In his annual address to the nation, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has called on citizens "to be vigilant and ready to answer the world's current complex geopolitical challenges."

In his speech, delivered in parliament on April 23, Rahmon called Tajikistan's political and economic ties with Russia a "priority," adding that Tajikistan also has to further develop relations with China, South Asia, and the United States.

Rahmon vowed to continue construction of the Roghun Dam in the country's south, saying that international experts will finish an assessment of the project's possible social and ecological impact on the region this summer.

Neighboring Uzbekistan has openly opposed construction of the Roghun power station, saying it will harm the ecology and cotton-irrigation infrastructure in the region.

It was Rahmon's first address to the nation after his reelection to a fourth term in November.
