Five U.S. Kayakers Missing In Tajikistan Found Alive

DUSHANBE -- Five U.S. nationals are missing in Tajikistan's southeastern province of Badakhshan, which borders Afghanistan.

The press service of the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe told RFE/RL on October 3 that the missing Americans had arrived in Tajikistan to go kayaking.

The names of the missing individuals and details about their disappearance have not been released.

Earlier media reports in Tajikistan said on October 2 that three U.S. citizens from Colorado had gone missing in the Pamir Mountains National Park.

The reports said that relatives of the three -- identified as Ben Luck, Matt Klema, and Nate Klema -- had written on Facebook that they had received text messages requesting help before the telephone connection was severed.

The national park's director, Shodi Solehjonov, told RFE/RL that a rescue party is searching for the missing Americans.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
