KAZAN, Russia -- A former interior minister of Russia’s central republic of Tatarstan who quit under a cloud of police scandal has been appointed acting deputy premier.

Asgat Safarov resigned as minister after a high-profile scandal at a police station in the Tatar capital, Kazan, in March, when a suspect in custody died after police allegedly beat and raped him.

Safarov's nomination was put forward by Tatar President Rustam Minnikhanov.

Tatarstan’s State Council has to approve Safarov's appointment later this month.
