Turkish artillery opened fire into Syria on October 7 minutes after a shell fired from the Syrian side of the border landed near a grain depot in the Turkish town of Akcakale.

It was the fifth straight day there was an exchange of fire across the border and comes after the October 3 shelling of the Turkish town of Akcakale that killed five people.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Turkish shells landed near the town of Tel Abyad, an area Turkey's Andolu news agency reported is currently under Syrian rebel control and also under attack from Syrian government forces.

Turkey has strengthened its military along the Syrian border and the Turkish parliament on October 4 approved cross-border military operations into Syria if needed.
