A leader of the Russian opposition, former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov, has been prevented from entering Ukraine, where he intended to participate in pro-EU demonstrations in Kyiv.

Nemtsov told Ukrainian media that the border-guard service at Kyiv's Boryspil international airport did not allow him to enter the country on December 12, saying they have been ordered to do so by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).

SBU officials confirmed Nemtsov was barred from entering Ukraine but declined to comment further.

Nemtsov has publicly expressed his support to the Ukrainian protesters, who are calling for the government's resignation after its refusal to sign a deal on closer ties with the EU.

On December 2, he and 10 other activists of the Solidarity opposition movement were detained for several hours in Moscow for holding an unsanctioned pro-EU rally near the Ukrainian Embassy.
