The UN refugee agency says the number of Pakistanis who have fled fighting between government forces and the Taliban this year has nearly doubled in the past two weeks, to 181,000.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman Adrian Edwards told reporters in Geneva that some 10,000 new arrivals were being registered daily at the Jazolai camp near the city of Peshawar.

Pakistani security forces started their offensive in the eastern Khyber Agency region on January 20, and the violence has increased recently.

Since 2008, when the government began fighting the Taliban, more than 650,000 people have fled their homes in regions bordering Afghanistan, including the Khyber Agency.
