U.S., Iran May Discuss Iraq Crisis On Margins Of P5+1 Talks

By RFE/RL
WASHINGTON -- A senior U.S. official says Washington may discuss the crisis in Iraq with Iranian officials on the margins of the nuclear talks with world powers that are being held in Vienna this week.

"There may be discussions of that issue on the margins," the U.S. official said, while adding that any such talks would be unrelated to the nuclear negotiations, which are aimed at reaching a lasting deal on Iran's sensitive nuclear work.

The U.S. official -- who requested anonymity -- spoke a day after Western media reported that the United States is considering talking to Iran about the situation in Iraq, where the government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is fighting rapid advances by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an Al-Qaeda splinter group.

Both Washington and Tehran have expressed serious concerns about the deteriorating situation in Iraq.
